ABU DHABI T20

The final of the 6th Sandy League cricket tournament was a high scoring one and at the end it was White Hunters who emerged triumphant over Department of Health (DoH) at the Abu Dhabi Cricket ground on Friday.

Mathew Boucher, CEO of ADC, gave away the prizes along with Shahnawaz, Manager of ADCC. Both the finalists had come through their League matches with comfortable wins over their opponents so it was bound to be an exciting and close final. Although it was not a nail biting finish but considering the total of 269 which White Hunters raised in 20 overs and DoH finishing on 242 it made for a good match for the cricket crazy fans that turned up at the venue.

After winning the toss White Hunters elected to bat but were in for a surprise when opener JD Mahesh lasted only seven balls for his three runs.

But DoH’s joy was short lived as man of the match and centurion Mohammed Rizwan and Abdulla Abbasi put their attack to the sword by compiling 148 runs for the second wicket.

The batsmen threw caution to the wind with runs coming thick and fast. Rizwan needed only 52 balls for his hurricane 107 which was studded with nine massive sixes and seven boundaries while Abbasi was equally devastating during his 73 from 29 balls. His eight sixes and four fours took the stuffing out of the DoH bowlers.

Rubbing more salt in DoH wounds was Gopa Kumar and Mohamed Asif. The former got to 26 runs from 17 balls (three fours) but Asif was merciless hitting four maximums and two fours for his 39 from just 13 balls which probably was the turning point in deciding the match.

DoH were good in fits and starts. Jamshed Butt (73 from 24 balls, 9×6, 4×4), Baber Ghazafar (43 from 26, 4×6, 2×4), Atif Ahmad (44 not out from 20, 5×6, 2×4) and Fayaz Ahmed (25 from 16, 2×6, 2×4) took their team close but the target looked a bit too steep.

Bilal Sajid (4-27) was outstanding with the ball bagging four of the top five DoH batsmen. Mohamed Asif (2-36) and Mohamed Irfan (2-40) did their bit with the ball to bowl out DoH in 19 overs.
