ZAMAN GIVES PAKISTAN HOPE ON DEBUT DESPITE MISSING OUT ON CENTURY AS AUSTRALIA TAKE TO THE CREASE ON THE FIRST DAY

After the morning barrage of magnificent bowling from Australia on Day 1 of the Test Match, Pakistan were given hope from debutant Fakhar Zaman after a solid innings at the Zayed Cricket Stadium to see them finish on 282.

Both Nathan Lyon and Marnus Labuschagne bowled with aggression and efficiency today, giving the home team plenty to chase after the lunch break. However, clearly spurred by making his debut for his country, Zaman revived optimism in his team by amassing an impressive 94 and narrowly missing out on his maiden test century due to an LBW decision.

After posting 282 in 81 overs, Pakistan left the crease before Australia took to the middle to bat the day out. Batsmen Finch and Khawaja opened to a probing burst of bowling from Mohammad Abbas – a man who now has 50 Test Match wickets; this now makes him the fastest Pakistani bowler to get to such a milestone. Khawaja was dismissed by Abbas for 3 runs – a huge wicket for Pakistan given his destructive performance in the first Test. Abbas then went on to take out Peter Siddle with an LBW to finish his day on a high.

Abbas was certainly showing some fight to finish the day, which will no doubt muster plenty of courage for his teammates tomorrow morning, despite an outstanding start from Australia during the day. Australia trail by 262 runs with 8 wickets remaining in the innings.

Play resumes at 10am and entrance to all Test days is free.
